What Is a Good Typing Speed?

May 20, 2026 4 min read

A practical guide to WPM ranges, accuracy, and what a good typing score means for work, school, and daily writing.

A good score depends on the task

For everyday typing, 40 to 60 WPM is a solid range. It is fast enough for email, school work, notes, and general admin tasks without feeling rushed. For jobs that involve heavy typing, transcription, dispatch notes, or constant customer support, 60 WPM or higher can be helpful.

Accuracy matters more than a flashy number

A high WPM score is only useful if the text is clean. Employers and teachers often care about accuracy because corrections take time. A steady 52 WPM with 97% accuracy is usually more valuable than 70 WPM with constant mistakes.

Use benchmarks as a guide

Under 30 WPM usually means you are still building keyboard familiarity. Around 40 WPM is comfortable for many people. Scores above 60 WPM are fast for most office work, and 80 WPM or higher is advanced when accuracy stays high.

Try it yourself

The easiest way to make the advice real is to take a short typing test, look at your WPM and accuracy, then repeat with one specific improvement in mind.
